The Gravedigger’s Wife

About the movie

English— Each day, in Djibouti City, Guled (Omar Abdi) and his comrades sit outside a local hospital to wait for the next ambulance. When in luck, they will leave with a body to bury in exchange for a little money. No one enjoys the job, but at least they have each other, and Guled has Nasra, played by Somali Canadian model Yasmin Warsame in her first acting role. The gravedigger’s adored wife is dying of kidney failure and in desperate need of a transplant. In order to pay for it, Guled would need the equivalent of what he might make in a year, in far less time. There is one other option in their home village, but Nasra refuses to hear it. She instead chooses to savour every moment left with her beloved and their son, Mahad, too young — and too emotionally distant from his father — to be without her. Nasra’s worsening health drives Guled’s decision to ignore her warnings in one last act of devotion.

French—Chaque jour, à Djibouti City, Guled (Omar Abdi) et ses camarades s’assoient devant un hôpital local pour attendre la prochaine ambulance. Quand ils ont de la chance, ils partent avec un corps à enterrer en échange d’un peu d’argent. Personne n’aime ce travail, mais au moins ils sont ensemble, et Guled a Nasra, jouée par le modèle canadien somalien Yasmin Warsame dans son premier rôle d’actrice. La femme adorée du fossoyeur est en train de mourir d’une insuffisance rénale et a désespérément besoin d’une greffe. Pour la payer, Guled aurait besoin de l’équivalent de ce qu’il pourrait gagner en un an, en beaucoup moins de temps. Il existe une autre option dans leur village natal, mais Nasra refuse de l’entendre. Elle choisit plutôt de savourer chaque moment qu’il lui reste avec son bien-aimé et leur fils, Mahad, trop jeune – et trop éloigné émotionnellement de son père – pour vivre sans elle. L’aggravation de l’état de santé de Nasra pousse Guled à ignorer ses avertissements dans un dernier acte de dévotion.
